Congratulations to Dr. Laura Purcell and Dr. Nagham El-houssein on their new appointments as Coordinator, Faculty Development - Niagara Regional Campus (NRC)!
Laura is a pediatric sports medicine physician practicing out of Cambridge. She has been a faculty member since 2010 and also serves as the Coordinator, Clinical Skills for our campus. Laura will be responsible for the local development, operation and oversight of the Waterloo Regional Campus Faculty Development.
Nagham is a family physician at the Grimsby Family Medical Centre, providing house calls and broad-scoped care. She also practices in emergency medicine and inpatient care. Nagham will be responsible for the promotion of teaching excellence through the provision of faculty development for the faculty of the Niagara Regional Campus.

A big shout out to Carol and Jen for their continued support at McMaster University
Both have been with McMaster for 10 years!
Carol Stewart and Jennifer MacDonnell reached a significant milestone this year. Both started working for McMaster 10 years ago and continue to provide excellent service.
A huge thank you to Carol and Jen for their ongoing support, advice, and expertise within our immediate team and in working with our extended partners within the Faculty of Health Science. They are valued members of the Continuing Professional Development family, and we are proud of their accomplishments.
On June 28 McMaster will honour their success at the Service Award Celebrations where they can celebrate with their peers who also share this anniversary. Congratulations Carol and Jen!

Our Continuing Professional Development office is leaping into the future
Bringing Emergency Department Training to the Metaverse
On Wednesday, 7 June, Education Services and McMaster Education Research, Innovation & Theory Program (MERIT) within the Faculty of Health Science awarded $25,000 to our team led by Drs. Ilana Bayer and Teresa Chan through the Education Scholarship Fund. Our project focuses on advancing the learner’s experience by building a virtual emergency department (ED) in the Metaverse for hands-on training.
The Metaverse is a 3D quasi-immersive virtual space where people experience life in ways they couldn't in the physical world using avatars and video for proximity chat. The Metaverse itself is computer generated and can therefore become any space imaginable – including an ED.
The purpose of the project is to create a metaverse-version of an ED where learners can simulate the care of multiple patients and interact hospital systems.
Bayer is the Director of the Learning Technologies Lab (LTL) and Chan, Associate Dean of Continuing Professional Development (CPD), are leading the project.
“This is an opportunity to develop active and flexible learning spaces where our trainees and clinicians can interact in a way that may not be possible in the physical environment,“ Bayer says.
“We are in a very interesting time where the technology is definitely going faster than we can handle in education. It’s up to us as education scholars to try to test some of these things out and design them in a way that makes sense for both learners and teachers alike,” Chan says.
“This is an exciting project where we are using a design-based research approach that elicits trainees’ and clinicians’ involvement in the design of the metaverse ED and patient scenarios. This will be followed by an evaluation of the learners and their experience in the simulations,” Bayer says.
The news of the approved funding proposal broke on the heels of our department winning the Hal Jayne Excellence in Education Award for Chan's work in emergency medicine education.
The Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM) recognized her profound contributions to emergency medicine pedagogy, equipping countless medical professionals with the necessary skills and knowledge to deliver exceptional patient care.
“As one of the first Canadians to win an award from SAEM, it has been a privilege to work with the organization to invest in and support clinician educators,” Chan says. |

The modules aim to address gaps in current educational offerings on pain management, opioid use disorder and opioid stewardship. These modules build upon the UGME curriculum, previously launched in January 2021, and the three curricula taken together act as a continuum of learning.
This curriculum was co-created with subject matter experts from across disciplines (e.g., addiction medicine, family medicine, pediatrics and obstetrics, anesthesiology), drawn from across the country and partnered with patient subject matter experts and family caregivers.

This initiative also seeks to empower individuals in academic medicine to collectively strive towards embedding equity, compassion, respect, safe spaces, and self-care into the fabric of our communities.”
The initiative adopts the Okanagan Charter:
“An International Charter for Health Promoting Universities and Colleges, which calls on post-secondary institutions to embed health into all aspects of campus culture, lead health promotion action, and collaboration locally and globally.”
